Tigers alone at top of conference

The Kingman Academy of Learning Tigers rolled over hosts Quartzsite Scholars 56-14 on Saturday. The win moved KAOL (6-0) into sole possession of the Arizona High School Football Federations North West Conference.

The Tigers' offense rolled up 538 yards. Mat Higuera led the rushing attack as he piled up 102 yards rushing on 10 carries and three touchdowns. Higuera also scored a touchdown on a pass from Toby Sullivan.

Sullivan finished the night 6-of-7 passing for 208 yards and four touchdowns. Justin Proudfoot led the Tigers in receiving as he hauled in three catches for 91 yards and two touchdowns.

The 14 points given up by the defense was the second largest amount of the season for KAOL. On Sept. 22, the Tigers surrendered 24 points to Phoenix Estrella (5-1).

KAOL recorded five takeaways against Scholars (2-4). Higuera and Proudfoot each had two interceptions, and Rich McCormick recovered a fumble.

The defense was led by the 10 tackles that Wayne Mulu and Derek Murdock each had as well as the nine by Bob Blake. Ethen Hopper had four sacks to raise his team-leading number to 35 for the season.

In total, the Tigers had seven sacks in the game that resulted in 54 yards lost by the Stars.

The Tigers will try to keep their perfect season intact at 7 p.m. Saturday when they play at Mohave Accelerated's (4-2) Firebird Field.
