Puppy Ranch owners proud of their pooches

When it's chow time at the Puppy Ranch, some of those who show up for dinner just might be chows.

Karen Grogen and Shirley Williams are partners and owners in the new K&S Puppy Ranch pet store that opened this month in the little strip mall just east of Golden Valley Gas along Highway 68 in Golden Valley. The store passed the health department inspection "with flying colors," Grogen said, and is just waiting now for its county permit for a nice, big sign so customers can find the store more easily.

"We sell both registered and unregistered puppies," Grogen said, talking above the playful barking and yipping coming from the tumbling and cavorting puppies whose cages greet customers immediately inside the door. "We are really proud to say that our puppies are better quality."

K&S Puppy Ranch boasts a spacious showroom with 21 kennels and two puppies to a kennel. Larger cages can house four puppies as they await their new owners.

Williams said the Puppy Ranch refuses to buy from "puppy mills" and that all of the store's puppies have at least three inoculations before they're even allowed inside the door.

Grogen said she is well acquainted with the puppy business. Her parents raised border collies and showed dogs, too.

"I went to Shelties," she said. "I showed them and kept the champions. It's very satisfying when you see your own dogs do so well and then get to see a line of champions that comes from them."

She handles the grooming end of the business.

"It's nice for a store like this to have our own groomer," she said, pointing to herself. "It saves a lot of time, money and hassle, and you know your puppies always look their best. I do plain cuts and show cuts, whichever you prefer for your dog."

She also grooms dogs as a sideline to the main puppy sales business, and she's taking appointments now.

Williams, too, has raised and shown dogs for decades, and she has the trophies and ribbons at home as proof of her success.

The business sells Chihuahuas, miniature pincers, shih-tzus, malti-poos, Yorkie-poos, miniature and standard poodles, Japanese chins, maltese, blue Pomeranians, Yorkies, Skipperkies, Schnauzers, and a complete line of supplies and doggie toys.

K&S Puppy Ranch is advertising reduced grand-opening prices on its puppies for all of September.

"And there are others in the store that qualify for an additional 20 percent off," Grogen said. "The best thing, apart from buying a beautiful, lovable puppy, is that all of our puppies come with a veterinarian's health guarantee. Darla Wright is our vet, and she's just wonderful."

While they aren't mentioned in the store's name, K&S Puppy Ranch also has exotic birds for sale.

"All of our animals are hand-raised," Williams said.

"We make sure each one gets plenty of attention so that they're well socialized when you get them home," Grogen said.
