I read with interest the caption to the picture on the front page of the Dec. 30 Miner regarding an "emotional moment." Mayor Les Byram declared Dec. 29 to be Art Jones Appreciation Day. Not to take anything away from Art Jones, I personally do not know him, but I was a bit miffed because I could only determine from the information printed that the reason for the declaration was because he was headed back to Iraq for a second tour in January. So why single him out? There are others from our little corner of the state that are currently serving in Iraq, or like Art, are on their way there for their first, second or third tour. Let's declare an appreciation day for all those from our community who are currently serving or have served time in Iraq.
And if we just have to single one soldier out, let's single out the one from our community who paid the ultimate price, young Coty Phelps, who lived most of his life in Mohave County, graduated from Kingman High School and lost his life in Iraq while serving our country.
