'Pen' pet ready to be adopted

KINGMAN - They've done their time and now five dogs from the Friends from the Pen program are looking for a new home.

Mohave Companion Animal Rescue Efforts Network and Management and Training Corporation at Arizona State Prison - Kingman will be holding a graduation ceremony and open house for the dogs and their trainers from 1 to 3 p.m. today at the prison.

The public is welcome to come and check out all of the dogs' new tricks. The dogs and their inmate handlers will show off all their new talents and then mingle with the guests. The dogs will be up for adoption after the graduation.

The program is a partnership between CARE-Net and MTC to save dogs from being euthanized at the county animal shelter and provide a positive experience for the inmates. For the Luv of Paws and Help Animals Live Today sponsored the five dogs. Each dog went through an extensive, eight-week training process with two inmates from the prison. The dogs spend almost all day with two inmates. Each inmate must keep a daily log of the dog's behavior, eating habits and training.
