Elmo E. "Mo" Fairchild, 84, of Kingman passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008, at Kingman Regional Medical Center.
He was born April 17, 1924, in Hugo, Okla., the sixth of nine children born to Charles and Nellie Fairchild.
Mo resided in Kingman for the past two and a half years, having moved here from Parker, Ariz., where he lived for more than 40 years.
Mo retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of service and also retired from the Arizona Department of Agriculture after 18 years of service. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Mo was preceded in death by his father and mother; brothers, Willard, Charles, Robert and Frank; sisters, Elvis, Opal and Cecil; and granddaughter, Heather.
He is survived by Lucille, his wife of 39 years; his sister, Marie (Walter) Washburn of Virginia; and his children, Paul (Theresa) Payne of Marrero, La., Annette Payne of Phoenix, and Kevin (Kathleen) Payne Sr. of Peoria.
He also is survived by grandchildren, Kevin (Leasha) Payne Jr. of Bullhead City, Kenneth Payne of Las Vegas, Richard Payne and Larry Jackson of Peoria, and Jason Champagne of Iraq; great-grandchildren, Paige, Gwen and Lacy Payne, Annabelle and Morgan Champagne, Jerra, Kevin III, and Kiana Payne; and many nieces and nephews.
He loved his grandkids, pets, gardening and baseball. He teased by making up pet names: Jodie, Scudder, Amy Lou and Ma Payne - you know who you are. It was hard for him to wait for warm weather to start his garden, and he loved sharing the fruits of his labor.
If the D-Backs wanted him to stay tuned, well, they had better be winning.
The neighborhood dogs will sorely miss the ritual of a bone tossed over the fence every morning.
He will forever be loved and missed.
The memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 425 E. Spring St.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to: Mutt Matchers and Friends, P.O. Box 766, Kingman, AZ 86402.
