Volunteers from the Cerbat Garden Club visited the Kingman Academy of Learning Primary School pre-school classrooms on Oct. 20 and Oct. 22 with hands-on lessons about "Apple and Pumpkin."

The KAOL School Gardening program and lesson plans are coordinated by Carrie Garfield of KAOL Primary School, Susan Jones of the Cerbat Garden Club and Nina Brackett of the University of Arizona Mohave County Cooperative Extension School Gardening Program.

Both Garfield and Jones were School Forestry workshop participants with the Mohave County School Gardening Program. The School Gardening Program is funded by the University of Arizona, Mohave County Cooperative Extension Office and the Mohave County School Superintendent's office.

The goal of the School Gardening Program is to integrate hands-on learning into any classroom and compliment subjects including science, math, language arts, social studies and art.

This was the first of a series of lessons on "Planting Seeds, Growing Minds!" for KAOL pre-schoolers; a collaboration to introduce the love of gardening to a new generation by the Cerbat Garden Club and the University of Arizona Mohave County Cooperative Extension School Gardening Program. All four KAOL pre-school classrooms of 70 students were working in groups of four to five students during "Center Time," where they participated in making apple flower pots, decorating mini-pumpkin Jack-o-lanterns, drawing apple and pumpkin posters, reading apple and pumpkin books, and tasting pumpkin pie.

All the Cerbat Garden Club volunteers enjoyed their time at KAOL last week; much gratitude and hugs were given by the children to Susan, Lynda, Peggy, Sharon, Virginia, Aldee, Diane and Sunny.

Cerbat Garden Club meets on the second Wednesday of each month with topics on gardening, wildlife, conservation, and floral design.
