Frank Benson went home to join his brother, Darrell, and sister, Dorothy Benson Welch, in heaven on Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008. Born Nov. 28, 1934, in Pokegama Township, Pine City, Minn., to Henry and Alice Benson, Frank was orphaned at age 2, and lived in many foster homes until joining the U.S. Navy at age 17.
After a duty tour of four years, during which he served in Korea and on the U.S.S. Burton Island, an icebreaker, Frank worked for OK Rubber Welders in Long Beach, Calif., then transferred to Westminster, Calif. He and his wife, Charlotte, purchased Big O Tires in Corona, Calif., in 1966. While in Corona, Frank served as a Cub Scoutmaster, was a member of the Civitan Service Club, and was also group chairman of Southern California Big O Tire Dealers. He and his wife opened a second store in Riverside, Calif., in 1989 before relocating to Kingman in 1992.
Frank served as the group chairman of the Arizona Big O Tire Dealers, was honored as Rotarian of the Year in Kingman for 1998/99, and received the 2004 Founder's Award from Big O Tires. Frank was involved in his community, and as such was well loved and admired by many.
Frank is survived by his wife of 52 years, Charlotte; three sons, Frank (Karen) William and his sons, Cory, Noah and Ethan; Eugene (Kristle) Lloyd, his daughter, Chasity, and sons Darrell and Chad, and his stepson, Darrell Brookshire; and Ronald Frederick and his two foster sons, Mark (Denise) Williams and Kenneth Williams; five great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Frank will be missed by his many friends, associates and family members.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Arizona time on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Dimond & Sons Silver Bell Chapel, 2620 Silver Creek Road, Bullhead City. Interment will be at 2 p.m. California time on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Riverside National Cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd., Riverside, Calif.
