KINGMAN - Judge Robert Moon granted a motion Wednesday for Shawn A. Guerrero to undergo a mental competency exam.

Guerrero, 26, of Kingman is accused of shooting his father, John Guerrero, 59, of Kingman and then setting fire to the house. He is charged with felony first-degree murder, arson of an occupied structure, criminal damage, tampering with physical evidence and cruelty to animals.

Guerrero's attorney filed a motion for the mental exam in court Wednesday. The exam will determine if Guerrero is mentally able to stand trial and whether he was legally sane at the time of the offense.

Deputy County Attorney Doug Camacho did not object to the motion but asked that a mental health expert from the state also be able to examine Guerrero.

Moon granted the motion and set a competency hearing for 10 a.m. on Dec. 31.
