PHOENIX - Ricardo J. Gonzalez of Kingman, along with seven other ordinands, was ordained as a permanent deacon of the Roman Catholic Church for the Diocese of Phoenix during a Mass of Ordination on Nov. 15 at Saints Simon and Jude Cathedral in Phoenix.
The Most Reverend Thomas J. Olmsted, bishop of the Diocese of Phoenix, presided at the Mass. Priests from throughout the diocese, including the Rev. Matthew Krempel, pastoral administrator of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Kingman, concelebrated at the Mass. Permanent deacons from the diocese, including Deacon Philip Wisely from Kingman, also participated in the Ordination, welcoming the newly-ordained deacons to their ranks.
Members of the Gonzalez family, including Deacon Ricardo's wife, Esthela, and daughters, Diana (Ruben) and Jasmine, also were in attendance. Maria de la Paz, Deacon Ricardo's mother, traveled from Mexico City for the Ordination.
Friends of the Gonzalez family residing in Phoenix attended. In addition, a number of parishioners from St. Mary Church in Kingman were present at the Ordination Mass.
Permanent deacons in the Roman Catholic Church may serve at the altar during Mass, assisting the celebrating priest; and may perform baptisms, marriages and funeral services. They also serve the church in many areas of ministry.
Deacon Gonzalez served at the altar at the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Nov. 16 at St. Mary Church. A reception in the honor of the new permanent deacon and his family was held at St. Mary Parish Center following that Mass.
Ricardo is the youth program director of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Kingman.
