KHS netters close in on state berth

KINGMAN - Before Friday's action, the Kingman High boys tennis team sat one spot from making the state tournament, which put its final three matches of the season into the spotlight as the Bulldogs strive toward getting into the postseason.

KHS (6-6, 4-4) easily disposed of Phoenix Goldwater (0-12, 0-8) at Centennial Park 9-0 to take its first of three steps. So dominating were the Bulldogs the JV team also shutout Goldwater, 7-0.

KHS' Tom Chastain kept his undefeated singles record at Nos. 5 and 6 intact. Chastain is now 10-0 for the season.

"I've eaten everyone up like a breakfast buffet," Chastain said about his year. "It's been about hard work and the lust for winning."

Sweeping Goldwater in all three doubles matches was a big positive for the Bulldogs considering doubles has hurt KHS in a number of its matches this season. The team of Zach Hiatt and Cody Schoonover went 2-0 this week, including a win at No. 2 over Northwest Region leader Boulder Creek on Tuesday.

"Today, the weather was an issue, but we still played well," Hiatt said. "They (Boulder Creek) were tough, but we made our volleys at the net and didn't give up. We new going in we'd have to play our best."

All of KHS' singles wins against Goldwater came in straight sets, with Chastain and Schoonover winning at love. Jon Casson won 6-1, 6-1, Dustin Beasley 6-1, 6-3, Hiatt 6-4, 6-1 and Taylor Aldridge 6-0, 7-5.

The best Goldwater did in doubles was winning three games against Casson and Beasley while Hiatt and Schoonover won 8-1, as did Chastain and Aldridge.

The Bulldogs host Willow Canyon (5-6, 3-4) 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at Centennial Park in their final home match of the season, and the lone senior, Beasley, will be honored.

Willow Canyon is currently two spots ahead of the Bulldogs in the rankings and gives the region matchup far-reaching implications.

Brett Nailor, Sam Martin, Hunter Lauck, Arlan Kor and Nick Weist picked up singles wins over Goldwater for the JV.

It was Nailor and Martin along with Collin Matheny and Lane Angle earning doubles wins for the Bulldogs.
