KINGMAN - By virtue of its 7-2 win over Valley Vista in Surprise Thursday, the Kingman High boys tennis team appears to have earned enough points in the Arizona Interscholastic Association's power rankings to qualify for the state tournament, which begins April 20.
KHS (7-7, 5-5) beat Valley Vista (4-8, 2-8) with five singles and two doubles' wins. Jon Casson, Zach Hiatt, Cody Schoonover, Tom Chastain and Sam Martin won their matches for the Bulldogs in straight sets. Only Dustin Beasley lost for KHS, but he came close to pulling it out in No. 2 singles. Beasley lost 7-6, 6-7, 14-12.
Hiatt and Schoonover won 8-1 in doubles and Chastain and Martin pulled out an 8-6 win for the Bulldogs. Casson and Beasley forfeited their doubles match due to time.
KHS' win had yet to be reported to the AIA at deadline, but once it is the Bulldogs should jump from the No. 17 spot to No. 14 and would open the state playoffs at Scottsdale Horizon (12-2).
However, the AIA audits its power rankings at the end of each season and adjustments could be made to current rankings. Most likely, KHS will know by midweek if and where it will play when the tournament begins.
