Dorcey A. Stephens, 98, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2009, at Labella Assisted Living in Kingman. She was born Feb. 1, 1911, in Scotland, S.D., to Charles and Mary (Simmons) Donley. She attended public school in Scotland.
She graduated from Northwestern University in 1932. She taught school in several communities in eastern South Dakota. She married Harry R. Stephens in 1942. After his discharge from the military in 1945, they moved to Vermillion, S.D., while he attended law school. Following his graduation from law school, they settled in Belle Fourche, S.D., where she taught at Black Hills State College in Spearfish and later worked as a speech therapist in the Belle Fourche Public School system.
Following Harry's retirement they moved to Mesa, Ariz., where they lived until Harry's death in 1987. In 1991, she moved to Kingman to be closer to her son, Jim, and his family.
She is survived by her son, Jim (Connie); granddaughters, Anne Stephens, Mara (Ty) Gilstrap of Kingman, Megan Stephens of Gilbert; and great-grandson, Hayden Stephens of Kingman. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry; her brothers, Charles and Richard; and her sister, Mary.
A memorial service will be held for her at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 302 E. Springs St., Kingman.
