Man charged for shooting BB into girl's eye

KINGMAN - A 22-year-old Kingman man faces felony aggravated assault charges after accidentally shooting a 7-year-old girl in the eye with a BB gun.

Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested Ian Patrick Grimes around 5 p.m. Monday after they received a weapons offense call in the 3100 block of Lass Avenue.

The reporting party said that his 7-year-old niece was playing with two other friends in a vacant lot next to their home when Grimes fired an air soft rifle, or BB gun, from the porch of his home in the 3100 block of Snavley Avenue. Lass and Snavley avenues run parallel to each other.

The children had been playing with toy guns. Grimes told deputies that he had seen the kids playing, went inside to retrieve the gun and was just trying to engage the kids.

Grimes said he only fired once, believing the gun to be unloaded.

The girl was struck in the right eye. She was treated in the ER at Kingman Regional Medical Center for a corneal abrasion.

Grimes reportedly apologized to the victim and said the incident was an accident.

Trish Carter with the Mohave County Sheriff's Office said the incident underscores the importance of safety when handling any sort of weapon.

"Never point a weapon, loaded or not, at someone else, be it a rubber band, a slingshot or a BB gun," she said.
