Court to decide if man can stand trial

KINGMAN - A mental competency hearing for a Kingman man has been moved into the new year.

Shawn A. Guerrero, 26, of Kingman is charged with felony first-degree murder, arson of an occupied structure, two counts of criminal damage, tampering with physical evidence, disorderly conduct with a weapon, resisting arrest and animal cruelty.

Guerrero is accused of shooting his father John Guerrero 59, of Kingman twice and then setting fire to his father's house in September.

Shawn Guerrero then fled the area and was arrested by Tempe Police officers a day later.

Judge Robert Moon moved Guerrero's competency hearing to 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 3. Judge Rick Williams was assigned the case when he took office on Jan. 1.

The hearing will determine weather Guerrero is mentally competent to stand trial and whether he was legally sane at the time of the offense.
