Humane Society to take over animal shelter operations

KINGMAN - Kingman residents may find some new faces at the Mohave County Animal Shelter on Buchanan Street in Kingman.

The Board of Supervisors Monday approved a contract with the Western Arizona Humane Society to take over operations at the shelter.

The Mohave County Sheriff's Office will still manage the animal control officers who pick up stray dogs and cats. However, MCSO will turn over the day-to-day operations of the shelter (feeding, cleaning and caring for the animals) to WAHS on Aug. 1. Animal control officers will be working with WAHS staff in order to make a smooth transition.

The contract with WAHS will run until June 30, 2012, with the option for the county to renew the contract for two more years. The contract is for $350,000.

The phone number for the shelter will stay the same, (928) 753-2727. To contact an animal control officer, call the MCSO dispatch center at (928) 753- 2141 or (800) 522-4312.
