St. Johns United Methodist Church held a "Rome: Paul and the Underground Church" themed summer Bible school for about 50 children last week. The church began to prepare in February for the event, which featured actors in costumes, a Roman "city," marketplace, shops, Roman-themed food, "chariot races" and a visit to the "underground church" of early Christians. Roman "guards" patrolled the area, causing kids to "hide" from them. Pastor Michael Bryant portrayed Paul, who was chained to the Roman guard Brutus, played by Joe Martin. He would talk to the kids while chained in his "prison cell." The camp was aimed at educating kids about what it was like to be a Christian during Roman times. Patty Hawkingberry directed the event.
