KINGMAN - The Kingman Fire Department Honor Guard will mark the 36th anniversary of the explosion that killed 11 firefighters with a ceremony Sunday at Firefighter Park.
The boiling liquid expanding vapor explosion occurred July 5, 1973, when a 33,500-gallon tanker was being off-loaded by employees into two propane storage tanks at the Doxol Propane Plant in the 2600 block of Andy Devine Ave.
The employees had hooked up liquid lines to fittings, and the valves were opened to check the connections when a leak occurred. A spark ignited the propane, and the BLEVE occurred shortly after firefighers had arrived on the scene.
Three firefighters were killed at the scene. Eight others died in the hospital as a result of their injuries.
The ceremony will begin at 9 a.m. and will last about an hour.
