Letter: We must work together for reform

I am being ripped off and not adequately covered by our current healthcare system. I am a Democrat; I like Obama. But even if I were rich or an employer paid for my health benefits, even if I was a Republican, even if I didn't like Obama, our current healthcare system needs to be reformed ... and we need to unite for the protection of all citizens of America in order to solve the current healthcare crisis in this great country of ours.

Health insurance premiums are so expensive and out of reach of the average working and retired American citizen. A single-payer option may be the answer - a system of healthcare insurance that redirects privately paid insurance premiums into a single public fund that covers everyone. Did you know that there are 1,100 different insurance companies in the U.S. receiving varying degrees of discounts from hospitals and doctors? More than $1.5 million per day is coming out of our health insurance premiums to pay for advertisements and lobbyists. That's more than $400 billion a year of our health insurance premiums not going to medical care!

There are six doctors in Oregon who have united to solve the healthcare problem. They are suggesting a single-payer option under which 100 percent of premiums collected would go toward medical care - with no co-pays and no deductibles. This option is not "socialized medicine" - it could be a simple logical answer to an affordable health insurance program for all American citizens. Whether you are Democrat or Republican, you must admit that the current healthcare system needs to be reformed. It is killing our citizens, hobbling our economy, crushing small businesses and threatening the solvency of our government. We must stop the complaining, the bickering, the name-calling and blaming the other party for stuff that's happened since 1776. We must unite for this transformation to efficiently and quickly take place.
