KINGMAN - More than 18 months after the doors were shut on the Office Depot store at 3260 Stockton Hill Road, the location is about to get a new tenant.
The pet store chain Petsmart confirmed Friday that it is currently in the process of remodeling the vacant storefront to serve as its new Kingman location. Remodeling work is already under way courtesy of the Ft. Worth, Texas-based firm Jacobs Engineering.
According to company Spokeswoman Margie Wojciechowski, the store is set to open in late fall and will provide about 30 full- and part-time jobs to the local economy. Wojciechowski did not, however, have an immediate answer for Petsmart's decision to locate its new store in the same plaza as existing competitor Petco, which currently operates at 3320 Stockton Hill Road, just a few doors down from the former Office Depot storefront.
The situation appears to mirror that of Office Depot, which also operated just a few doors down from one of its major competitors, Staples, which also occupies the plaza. One of only seven in Arizona at the time, Kingman's Office Depot was one of more than 100 stores nationwide slated for closure at the end of 2008 due to poor performance.
By comparison, Petsmart's decision to open a store here means the chain will now have representation in each of the county's three most populous cities.
