As the proud honorary chair of the second Partner Up, Arizona Dinner, I have proclaimed Feb. 8-12 Partner Up, Arizona Week here in our state. Partner Up, Arizona Week was established in 2009 by the Arizona Affiliate of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America to celebrate its community and volunteer support throughout the state. I'm proud of the work the Partnership has done on behalf of Arizonans, but we still have a long way to go in drug and alcohol prevention and education.
I'd like to take this chance to encourage parents and caregivers to begin an ongoing dialogue with their kids and teens during Partner Up, Arizona Week.
Our most alarming trend today among teens is the abuse of prescription medication. The Partnership emphasizes three key points in preventing prescription drug abuse: Educate, Communicate and Safeguard.
Parents: Educate yourselves on the drugs kids are using, Communicate with your kids about the dangers of abusing drugs like prescription medications, and Safeguard your medicine cabinet at home and ask your family and friends to do the same.
Go to www.PartnerUpAz.org for or more helpful tips. Along with the Partnership, we all have a hand in helping Arizona's youth lead happy, healthy and productive lives.
