United States Marine Corps Cpl. David M. Lopez returned home recently from a tour in Afghanistan. He has been part of the Marine Corps for three years and will soon spend another year stationed in San Diego. Saturday, the Patriot Guard Riders escorted Lopez and his family to VFW Post 10836 for a celebration and lunch to thank him for his service. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Marines Corps League Detachment #887 and Korean War Veterans Association of Mohave County also participated. Also on Saturday, the Royal Rangers from Hilltop Foursquare Church went to work (right), placing flagpoles they decorated in red, white and blue next to veteran's graves at Mountain View Cemetery. True Value provided a discount for the poles. The Royal Rangers wanted to do something to honor veterans on Memorial Day, and the flag holders were deemed appropriate at the cemetery, the final resting place for over 1,000 veterans. A ceremony to mark Memorial Day begins at 11 a.m. today at the cemetery, and American Legion Post 14 will place flags at veterans' grave sites. Call (928) 753-3555 for more information.
