The Arizona Smoker's Helpline is asking smokers to go tobacco-free for a day. Thursday, Nov. 18, is the Great American Smokeout. The event is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and encourages tobacco users to quit for a day.
Arizona has one of the lowest rate of smokers in the country at 16 percent of the population compared to about 21 percent of the population nationally, said Wayne Tormala, bureau chief for Tobacco and Chronic Disease at the Arizona Department of Health Services. But the remaining Arizona smokers are hard to reach, which makes easy access to the free quit tips and other information at www.ashline.org and at the Arizona Smokers Help Line, (800) 556-6222, so valuable to smokers, he said.
