Dentist offers free screenings for veterans on Veterans Day

KINGMAN - While Veterans Day is still nearly two months away, one local dentist's office is already getting the word out about its effort to help local veterans with free dental care in honor of the holiday and the men and women it celebrates.

The medical office of Dr. Jason Lowry plans to offer free dental examinations, X-rays and oral cancer screenings to all active U.S. troops and discharged veterans from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11. A limited number of veterans will also receive free cleanings in addition to the regular checkups.

"We want to be able to have them come in here and do exams and X-rays, with the first 25 or so getting free cleanings," said Starla Snider, one of Lowry's dental assistants and office manager. "It's just to get them in here and see what they need to have done if they're having problems, or if they need cleanings, as kind of a thank you for being a veteran."

Snider noted that since Lowry's office is located next door to the local Veterans Administration clinic, he already sees a number of veterans coming in to ask questions. But with the nearest VA dental facilities in Prescott, many veterans have few local options for dental care.

"Not all veterans have VA benefits," Snider said. "Most of them are living on pensions and fixed incomes, and in that situation, your teeth aren't always a priority. We want to kind of do this as an annual thing, where we start it this year and then do it every year afterward to give back to the veterans."

She added that while the office will be open solely to veterans on Veterans Day, it is still important that any veterans interested in taking advantage of the free checkups schedule in advance so that Lowry's staff can set up a patient record.

"We have to have paperwork on patients and their medical history set up before we can see them," Snider said. "They can just walk in, and either bring in official discharge papers or applicable military ID."

Lowry's office is located at 1730 E. Beverly Ave. For more information, call (928) 753-5069.
