In memory of: Merettia Joan Brown

Mrs. Merettia Joan Brown, 74, died Tuesday, April 5, 2011, in Kingman following complications due to a sudden illness. Mrs. Brown was born Sept. 12, 1936, in Horton, Kan., and was raised in Ozawkie, Kan., where she graduated high school. She was the daughter of Harold and Ethel Pelton.

She met and married Donald Brown of Valley Falls, Kan., in 1955 and together they had six children. In the course of her life, while raising six children she also worked as a bank teller, was an active den mother for Cub Scouts, and later obtained her real estate license.

Following the retirement of her husband they moved from Victorville, Calif., to Meadview. From there they enjoyed traveling in their fifth-wheel trailer and socializing with many friends.

Mrs. Brown was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary, Post 2924, in Victorville, and was active with Post 11014 in Meadview.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and is survived by her husband Donald; six children, Tony Brown of Portland, Ore., Jay Brown of Victorville, Tina McFarland and husband John of Apple Valley, Calif., Monte "Skip" Brown and wife Karen of Bend, Ore., Phil Brown and wife Tiffany of Apple Valley, and Jackie Leach and husband Mike of Olathe, Kan. She also leaves behind 14 grandchildren and her sister, Vada Adams with husband Billie of Topeka, Kan.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the VFW Hall in Meadview. Burial will be in Valley Falls Cemetery, Valley Falls, Kan. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Women's Auxiliary.
