KHS matmen open season 2-1 at meet

Waite, Leyva, Delong go 3-0 for Bulldogs at Avondale

The Kingman High wrestling team opened the season with a four-team meet Wednesday in Avondale, defeating Tolleson and Glendale Copper Canyon, but losing to host Westview.

Matthew Waite (145), Andrew Leyva (145) and Dalton Delong (126) went 3-0 for the Bulldogs.

"As a team we did OK," KHS coach Brandon Clor said. "Coming out as the second best team is a good confidence builder as a team."

The Bulldogs defeated Copper Canyon 42-30 with Delong pinning Jose Ramirez in 1:24 in the 126-pound weight class. Jarred Brown also pinned Kiefer Cover of Copper Canyon in 1:20 at 170.

Leyva, Waite, Taylor Savage (138), Andrew Adams (113) and Josh Estensen (120) all won by forfeit.

Jacob Chandler, Thomas Canez, Justin Lowe and Joe Rubbelke lost.

Daniel Quijano pinned Chandler at 132 in a time of 1:11; Marco Aguayo pinned Canez at 160 in a time of 1:57.

Lowe fell to Lance Montgomery in 2:45 at 195 and Rubbelke fell to Derrick Soto at 285 in a time of 1:07.

Against Tolleson, Waite, Brown, Leyva, and Chandler all pinned their opponents to lead the Bulldogs to a 54-27 win.

Waite pinned Esai Coronado in 1:28, Brown pinned Cesar Nunez in 2:44, Leyva pinned Francisco Retana in 1:26 and Chandler pinned Adrian Hill in 2:21.

Estensen and Savage lost their matches, with Esteon falling in an 8-6 decision to Aaron Molina and Savage being pinned in 1:02 by Gabriel Lopez.

Canez, Lowe, Rubbelke, Delong and Adams all won by forfeit.

KHS had a difficult time with Westview with five wrestlers being pinned by the Knights and two dropping major decisions in a 56-22 loss.

Adams, Chandler, Savage, Brown and Lowe were all pinned. Adams was pinned by Eddie Martinez in 1:21, Chandler pinned by Carl Lofton in 1:23, Savage pinned by Davontay Scaggs in 26 seconds, Brown pinned by Jacob Jarosz in 2:43 and Lowe was pinned by Kevin Smith in 49 seconds.

Estensen dropped a 8-0 major decision to Gabriel Barrera and Canez dropped a 12-5 major decision to Richard Miranda III.

Delong, Waite and Leyva all pinned their Westview opponents, with Delong pinning Andrew Jackson in 1:44, Waite pinning Kordell Provchy in 4:51 and Leyva pinning Trenton Zornes in 1:03.

Rubbelke won his match with Michael Valora with a 16-10 major decision.

KHS will travel to Phoenix Sierra Linda Wednesday for another four-team meet with Goodyear Desert Edge, Copper Canyon and Surprise Shadow Ridge.
