Waite, Leyva improve to 7-0 for KHS wrestlers

Bulldogs finish with a 3-1 mark at five-team meet in Phoenix

After struggling in last week's meet in Avondale, Kingman High wrestler Josh Estensen wanted a better showing Wednesday during the Bulldogs five-team meet with Goodyear Desert Edge, Glendale Copper Canyon, Phoenix Sierra Linda and Surprise Shadow Ridge.

He got it.

The 120-pounder went 4-0, including pinning Jose Cruz of Desert Edge in 2:42 and Shadow Ridge's Jacob Casillas in 1:30 and winning 9-6 decision win over Edgar Preciado of Sierra Linda as KHS went 3-1, beating Desert Edge, Shadow Ridge and Copper Canyon while falling to Sierra Linda.

"Our goal coming into the meet was to have a plan to win," KHS wrestling coach Brandon Clor said. "That meant each wrestler going into each of their matches had a specific plan as to how they were going to win the match."

KHS beat Desert Edge 60-24 and Shadow Ridge 48-33 but couldn't overcome the forfeited 106 and 113 weight classes against Sierra Linda, falling 41-29.

"It really is the difference in missing our 113 and 106 weights," Clor said. "Our biggest struggle is having confidence and making up for the forfeits. Every year we struggle to get lightweight guys out for the team, and then they grow and we have to find new ones. Both Josh (Estensen) and Jacob Chandler were at one time our 103 pound wrestlers and have since grown up."

Sierra Linda's Rafael Cruz won a 5-2 decision over Chandler at 132. Chandler was also pinned by Desert Edge's Paul Madueno in 3:42 but bounced back and pinned Shadow Ridge's Joseph Cuciti in 2:31.

The Bulldogs Matthew Waite and Andrew Leyva each improved to 7-0 in their matches with wins on Wednesday.

Waite pinned Desert Edge's Nathan Becker in 27 seconds and Sierra Linda's Ruben Nava in 2:36. He won by forfeit against Shadow Ridge.

Leyva pinned Desert Edge's Jesus Garay in 2:43 and Shadow Ridge's John Bungard in 5:51. He received a major decision win, 15-9, over Sierra Linda's Jose Donis.

KHS traveled to Avondale for the Agua Fria Invitational Friday and Saturday. There, the Bulldogs were hoping for a good showing as the tournament will help with seeding for the Doc Wright Invitational Jan. 13-14 and the head-to-head matchups will help for seeding at the sectional meet Feb. 3-4.

"Going into this weekend we are looking to place as a team at Agua Fria," Clor said Thursday. "We've already beaten Desert Edge and Tolleson, we know we can get Sierra Linda. If we wrestle as well as we have the last two weeks, we will place."

The Bulldogs next match will be Wednesday at Bullhead City Mohave.
