Going off to college can be a scary experience. But get stuck with the wrong roommate and it can get down-right murderous. At least that's the case in director Christian E. Christiansen's latest thriller to hit the big screen, "The Roommate."
When Sara Matthews, played by Minka Kelly, arrives at college, her focus is on getting over her ex-boyfriend and moving on with a career in fashion. Then she meets her new roommate Rebecca, played by Leighton Meester, who at first seems normal. But when Rebecca quickly starts obsessing over Sara, no one around her is going to be safe. That includes her new friends, party girl Tracy, played by Alyson Michalka, and frat boy Stephen, played by Cam Gigadet.
This young, sexy cast does a great job. And as far as the storyline goes, it plays out consistent enough to keep you entertained from beginning to end. All that while, glimpses of craziness accent this thriller perfectly.
The only complaint comes in the depth of the film's characters. Everyone seems to be following their cookie-cutter stereotypes. The clueless lead, slutty friend, too cool frat boy, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary here to set them apart other than just being beautiful.
These days I guess that's enough.
That aside, The Roommate is a nice thrill ride and makes for a great movie going experience. I give it 2.5 miners out of 4. Enjoy!
