MCSO targets speeders on way to canyon

KINGMAN - The Mohave County Sheriff's Office has planned a special traffic enforcement detail from Wednesday through Feb. 12 for Pierce Ferry Road and Diamond Bar Road leading to the Grand Canyon West-Skywalk area.

MCSO expects to see an influx of traffic in the area during this time as it relates to the Chinese New Year. MCSO anticipates an increase over this time in the number of motor coaches, mini-buses, and passenger vans operated by commercial tour agencies from Arizona, Nevada and California.

The enforcement effort will target all serious moving violations, but specifically speeding drivers. In 2010, the Mohave County Sheriff's Office investigated two fatal crashes involving tourists and/or tour operators in the targeted area. These two crashes resulted in four deaths and eight others being seriously injured, said Sgt. Don Bischoff, detail supervisor.

A three-year history indicates more than 100 traffic crashes were investigated in the target area, with more than 30 percent resulting in serious injury or death.
