Dennis H. Callahan Sr. passed away Thursday, June 9, 2011, after a brief battle with stomach cancer. Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Ray, as well as his oldest son, Dennis Callahan Jr.
Dennis was born in Milford, Ill., June 14, 1937; he served the United States Navy from 1955 to 1958 aboard the ship USS Los Angeles. After the Navy, Dennis attended Ferrier School at Cal Poly Tech. He came to Arizona in 1959.
In his lifetime, Dennis worked on ranches as a young man, shod horses around Mohave County for many years, drove heavy equipment, and later owned and operated his own hay hauling business.
Dennis married Loretta (Bland) Callahan 50 years ago in Wikieup, Ariz. Dennis and Loretta had five children, Dennis Callahan Jr. (deceased March 3, 2003), Daniel Callahan, David Callahan, Dawn (Tim) Parker, and Denna Jo (Lance) Cencelewski. There are 11 grandchildren: Derrick Callahan, Danielle (Jordan) McMillon, David Shawn Callahan Jr., Drew Parker, Dustin Callahan, Dylan Callahan, Chad Callahan, Dakota Parker, Serena Parker, Delanie Cencelewski, and Drayson Cencelewski.
He is survived by his sisters, Barbara Sorenson, Marcia (Dean) Pettit, and Judith (Veryl) Butterfield; and two brothers, Merlin (Linda) Callahan and Rex (Jackie) Callahan, all living out of state.
Dennis will be missed by many, the friends and family who loved him and knew him as "Pops," as well as his many friends around the community, including the group of gentlemen at Percy's tin shed.
The memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 13, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore Ave.
