Verna Lou Vargo went to be with the Lord on Monday, June 20, 2011.
Born Jan. 26, 1943, in Elkhart, Ind., Verna had a zest for life like no other. She was witty, laughed often, and loved deeply. She amazed us all with her strength, determination and willpower to live.
As a young woman, Verna and her high school friend Karlann traveled to Europe, touring eight countries and even attending the 1964 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck, Austria. Neither girl had ever been on a plane before.
After her return to this country, she moved to California. When her mother became ill, Verna brought her to California and took care of her until her death.
Verna then moved to Kingman, and worked for Arizona West, where she met her dear friend, Cyndee Wood. Cyndee has been a close friend and lifeline ever since.
Verna's life was rich with many wonderful friends.
The last eleven years of Verna's life were made possible by the gift of life and love from her childhood friend Bev Makin. Bev donated her kidney in 2000. Without this amazingly generous gift, Verna would have been gone from our lives long ago.
Although Verna never had any children of her own, she loved her friend's children as her own and became a mother to many.
She often amazed us with the thoughtfulness of her gifts and her ability to always remember their birthdays. She often made us laugh with her childhood stories and advice, even if they didn't always want it.
One of Verna's favorite hobbies was cooking and eating.
In fact, Verna's final wish, made just hours before her passing, was a McDonald's hamburger, fries and a diet coke with lemon. A dream meal for a diabetic.
A memorial service will be held for Verna Lou Vargo at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 2, at Mountain View Cemetery, 1301 Stockton Hill Road. A reception will be held immediately following at the Aldridge household.
