Obituary: Verna Marie Moneysmith

Verna Marie Moneysmith was born June 16, 1916, on a farm near Norway, Iowa. She was the first child of Anard and Martha Gunderson. She was the oldest of three brothers and one sister. As a child she lived in Iowa and then on a farm south of Barron, Wis. She attended country schools.

Verna married Paul Raymond Millermon on Dec. 2, 1932, in Barron. They had six sons; one son died in infancy. She and Paul lived and worked on various farms in Richmond, Amery and South Barron until Paul began working as a lineman for Co-op Power Company. The family than lived in Barron, Rice Lake, Durand and Menomonie, Wis. In Menomonie, they lived in various places until they bought a home at 1402 Eighth St. and lived there until 1947.

In 1947, the family, with the five boys, moved to Torrance, Calif., and then in 1950 to Fair Oaks, Calif., where they lived at 7400 Heather Road. Paul was killed on the job July 19, 1951. Verna, who had never worked outside the home, had to go to work to support the family. She worked for the Sacramento County Hospital as a nurses' aide. She then was able to get a job with the U.S. Geological Survey because of her artistic abilities. Because of her job, she moved to Sunnyvale, Calif., about 1959. While there she met and married Ivan Moneysmith. She lived in Sunnyvale for about 17 years, and then retired and moved to Kingman. She continued to live in Kingman until she decided to go into the nursing home in Sacramento.

Verna Marie Moneysmith died on Wednesday, March 2, 2011, at the Casa Coloma Care Center in Rancho Cordova, Calif. She was 94.

Verna is survived by her five sons, Donald H. Millermon and his wife Marie of Kingman, Arden P. Millermon and his wife of Pleasant Grove, Calif., Larry L. Millermon of Kingman, Paul V. Millermon and his wife Carol of Paonia, Colo., and Harvey J. Millermon and his wife JoAnn of Kingman. Also surviving are 20 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and numerous great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, Allan Millermon.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. with the funeral service at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, at Sutton Memorial Funeral Home, 1701 Sycamore Ave., with Pastor Paul Millermon officiating. The graveside services will immediately follow at Mountain View Cemetery, 1301 Stockton Hill Road.
