Director Justin Lin stomps the accelerator pedal on another Fast and Furious film with his latest, "Fast Five."
The film stars fan favorites Dominic Toretto, played by Vin Diesel, and Brian O'Connor, played by Paul Walker. In addition, Fast brings back a number of familiar faces that the Furious fans have come to love - not to mention the introduction of hard-nosed agent Luke Hobbs, aka Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
But does this installment deliver the same over-the-top action while still being grounded in the illegal street-racing culture that fans had come to expect?
If you're unfamiliar with the basic Fast Five plot, here's the rundown:
When Brian and Mia break Dom out of federal custody by rolling a transport, they are forced to flee the country to elude authorities. Cornered in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last huge job in order to gain their freedom forever. As they call together their elite team of racers and hustlers, they realize their only shot of getting out for good means stealing from the same corrupt businessman who wants them dead. Add into the mix federal agent Hobbs, whose impeccable record is put on the line when he's assigned to track down Dom and Brian. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can't separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must corner his targets before the real bad guys run them down first.
Paul Walker and Vin Diesel are awesome as the leads in Fast Five, and in a film packed with plenty of familiar faces, it's "The Rock's" agent Hobbs who ends up elevating the film above the other installments. The rivalry between Hobbs and Toretto offers up a number of testosterone-fueled moments that includes the two heavy-hitters squaring off one-on-one that will, for most fans, deliver on all the hype the film has been receiving as a result.
Fast Five, like its action scenes, moves quick and offers up a rapid-fire set of entertaining elements that is sure to be like a nitrous blast to your movie-going experience. As a result, Fast Five can only be described as a fun and immensely entertaining ride that brings one word to mind when describing it ... awesome!
So without hesitation, I give Fast Five a coveted 4 out of 4 miners.
