Kay Bersofsky, 74, passed away on Friday, Sept. 2. She was born Oct. 30, 1936, in Gilliam, Mo., to Robert and Vernell Johnson. Kay lived most of her life in Kansas City and later moved to the Lake of the Ozarks to be close to family and dear friends. Kay moved to Kingman in 2007.
Kay was a professional underwriter with an international insurance company, General Accident Group. She was the first woman in the company to achieve the status of underwriter. Later in her career she was the marketing representative for Missouri and Kansas territories. She was also the president of the Kansas Insurance Agents Association. She retired after 29 years with General Accident Group.
Kay is survived by her daughter, Lauri Ward, and son-in-law, Donnie Ward of Kingman. Kay was blessed with a large, loving family including her grandchildren, Jessica Ward and Shad Murphy, and Jeremy and Sommer Ward; and great-granddaughter, Jemma Ward, all of Kingman. Kay also leaves behind her sister and brother-in-law, Bobette and Jay Hoppers of Missouri; her brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Marge Johnson of California; and her nieces and nephews, Susan "Kay" Russell, Donnie Bauerle, Kathy and Steve Prehn, Rob and Lil Johnson, and Christi and Greg Epps; and 12 great-nieces and nephews.
Kay moved to Kingman to be with her family. During that time Kingman became her home. She was welcomed into the community and made many friends. Kay was full of life, fun to be with, always had a smile, and loved to laugh. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Judes Childrens Reseach Hospital or KRMC Hospice House.
A celebration of life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church located at 3958 N. Bank St. Food and refreshments will be provided after the service.
