Triathlon moves downtown

KINGMAN - Once you've got the kids cleaned off from Thursday's Mud Mania, head down to Kids Little Smiles to register for the sixth annual Kids Triathlon.

The triathlon will be held Aug. 26 and is open to ages 1 through 18. This year, for the first time, the triathlon will take place downtown, said event director and local fitness expert Anna Shuffler.

It will start at the public pool on Grandview Avenue, followed by a bike course through the parking lot of the new Lee Williams High School. A run on the school's brand-new track will close out the race.

Distances will be tailored to the participants' ages, Shuffler said. Last year's race attracted about 80 kids, the youngest being just 1 year old.

"It was super cute," Shuffler said. "I think the parents get more excited than the kids."

Kids are allowed to use flotation devices and parents are allowed in the pool to lend a supportive hand. Any sort of foot-powered bike or tricycle can be used for the cycling portion, but scooters are not allowed.

Running shoes and helmets are required. Race organizers will supply the official race bibs along with a medal and t-shirt for each child.

Participating in the triathlon costs $10 per child.

Kids Little Smiles on Hualapai Mountain Road is the event's sponsor as well as a registration point. Packets will be ready for pickup the day before the race.
