Kingman Mayor John Salem's 19-year-old son and his roommate have been charged with growing marijuana.

Trent Salem and Brandon Militello, also 19, were arrested Friday after officials with the Mohave Area General Narcotics Enforcement Team served a search warrant at a home shared by the teens in the 3600 block of Wells Street.

Both Salem and Militello hold valid medical marijuana cards.

Under guidelines passed by the Arizona Department of Health Services, qualified patients are allowed to grow up to 12 plants and have 2½ ounces of pot.

Authorities said Salem and Militello had 60 plants in two rooms devoted solely to growing.

MAGNET Task Force Supervisor Jamie Clark described the setup as fairly elaborate and said the rooms had a ventilation system and a portable swamp cooler to control the humidity.

MAGNET seized a total of 4½ pounds of marijuana from the residence, along with a half-pound of hashish.

The two face felony-level charges of cultivating and possession of a controlled substance.
