KINGMAN - Northern Arizona Consolidated Fire District is offering free smoke detectors to elderly individuals who meet certain income requirements.
The new smoke detectors are courtesy of a partnership with the Federal Emergency Management Association. NACFD District residents who are 65 and older and qualify as low income are eligible for the free alarm.
NACFD firefighters will install the detectors as well as conduct a home fire safety inspection.
Fire Chief Pat Moore said statistically, working smoke alarms cut the chances of dying in a house fire in half. He said that even though more than 90 percent of homes are outfitted with smoke alarms, up to a third of them don't work properly.
To see if you are eligible for free smoke alarms, call the NACFD Administration at (928) 757-3151 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
