KINGMAN - Scholarship funds are available to Mohave Community College students interested in transferring to the new Arizona State University campus in Lake Havasu City after earning an associate degree.
The Havasu Foundation for Higher Education, which led a seven-year effort to bring a four-year university to Lake Havasu City, announced that scholarship funds have been set up specifically for students who complete their two-year degree at a regionally accredited community college such as MCC and transfer to ASU.
ASU Colleges at Lake Havasu City is scheduled to open this fall.
"This is very exciting news for our college and its students ... not to mention the new university campus," said MCC President Michael Kearns. "Students now have even more reason to stay in our local area and continue their education."
The MCC Board of Governors recently reviewed a series of transfer admission guarantee pathways with ASU for high-demand degrees, including four that are associated specifically with ASU Colleges at Lake Havasu City.
Students who complete a TAG pathway have guaranteed admission to the major at the university and are eligible to participate in the ASU Tuition Commitment Program (for Arizona residents), which lowers tuition. All credits on a TAG pathway both transfer and apply to the ASU major, making them cost-effective and time-efficient options for students. Students can learn more about these TAG pathways at ASU's website for MCC: http://transfer.asu.edu/mohave.
"A strong connection is building between Arizona State University and Mohave Community College," said Jerry Ernst, a spokesman for HFHE's scholarship committee.
The non-profit foundation raised $2 million in 2011 for campus renovations. Now the group is attempting to raise an additional $1 million for various scholarships.
