Kingman native and Navy Petty Officer First Class Derek Nelson, was announced as 2011 Sailor of the Year for Navy Recruiting District Phoenix during an awards ceremony in Laughlin on Jan. 10. Nelson is the son of Renette Nelson and son-in-law of Pete and Sandy Albright, all from Kingman. A 2001 graduate of Mohave High School in Bullhead City, Nelson joined the Navy as an Aviation Maintenance Administration man in 2003. After basic training and technical school he reported to Patrol Squadron (VP) One at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Wash. While attached to VP-1, Nelson deployed to Angeles City, Philippines, as well as Kadena and Misawa Japan.

After his tour with VP-1, he reported as a recruiter at Navy Recruiting District San Diego in 2007 and converted to a Navy Career Counselor. Nelson reported to Recruiting District Phoenix in 2010 and is currently the Leading Petty Officer at Navy Recruiting Station Desert Sky in Phoenix.

His awards include one Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, three Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals and two Good Conduct Medals.
