Alleged smugglers, illegals bagged on Arizona Strip

A traffic stop on Interstate 15 in the Arizona Strip area led to the arrest of two alleged human smugglers and six illegal immigrants.

Mohave County Sheriff's Spokeswoman Trish Carter said the van was stopped around 11 p.m. Sunday.

A Spanish-speaking deputy from the Washington County Sheriff's Office responded and helped with communications. With the assistance of Border Patrol, they found six occupants to be illegal immigrants.

Carter said investigations determined that the driver, Henrry Leon-Zacarias, 29, and one the passengers, Erwin Zacarias-Leon, 24, were smuggling the illegal immigrants to Ohio.

Leon-Zacarias and Zacarias-Leon, both of Maryland, were arrested on felony charges of human smuggling and unlawful transport of aliens and booked into the Mesquite Jail.

The illegal immigrants were transported to the Washington County Jail where Border Patrol later took them into custody.
