The Kingman Fire Department and the Department of Public Safety recently conducted a joint training for wildland firefighting. DPS was completing their annual Red Card Certification from the State Forestry Division by using the helicopter to do bucket drops on wildland fires. KFD personnel were trained in the setting up and filling of a 3,000-gallon dip tank in which the helicopter fills the Bambi bucket to drop on wildland fires. The DPS pilots worked on setting the bucket into the dip tank, filling it and then making various types of water drops. KFD personnel had the opportunity to direct - using hand signals and radio communications - the helicopter to various locations to make water drops on simulated fires. DPS personnel also trained the KFD firefighters on safety while working around helicopters. Pictured, DPS Flight Medic Johnny Rodriquez explains the use of the Bambi bucket.
