What do Pirates, monkey butlers, Queen Victoria, and an overweight Dodo bird have in common? They are all featured in the new computer animated film, "The Pirates! Band of Misfits." "Pirates" tells the story of an odd and eccentric pirate captain (named, conveniently enough, Pirate Captain) and his crew of oddball pirates. Pirate Captain and his crew are pirates during the reign of Queen Victoria, whose family crest states "I hate Pirates." This hatred and the crushing strength of the Queen's navy makes most pirates stay as far away from England as possible.
The film details Pirate Captain's attempt to claim the title of Pirate of the Year. Unfortunately, many obstacles stand in his path. Not only does he have to contend with actual "piratey" pirates, he has to find a chest full of booty to prove himself as Pirate of the Year material.
Enter Charles Darwin who sees Pirate Captain's "parrot" Polly for what she truly is, the last of the Dodo birds. Darwin convinces Pirate Captain to bring Polly to London for a science contest, where the main prize is untold riches. Unfortunately for Pirate Captain, Darwin's view of untold riches is a meeting with the pirate-hating monarch herself. Pirate Captain's meeting with Queen Victoria leads to a zany adventure that risks not only Pirate Captain's chance at becoming Pirate of the Year, but his and his crew's very lives as well.
This film is beautifully done and will appeal to children of all ages. However, this movie is rated PG for crude humor and language. Parental caution should be used for younger children. I give "The Pirates! Band of Misfits" 4 out of 5 Miners.
