KINGMAN - A Kingman man was killed in a fiery crash at the bottom of an Interstate 40 off ramp early Thursday morning.
The victim was identified by the Department of Public Safety as 33-year-old Ryan Edward Perea. Authorities said that at around 2 a.m. Thursday, Perea's SUV was coming down the eastbound off ramp at Andy Devine Avenue at a high rate of speed when it struck a large sign pole head-on.
The force of the impact was such that the front of the SUV was wrapped around the pole, which was embedded about five feet inside the vehicle.
"Both (the passenger and driver's) sides of the vehicle were touching each other. It was that bad," said Kingman Fire Battalion Chief Bill Johnston.
The SUV caught fire after the crash and was fully engulfed with Perea inside by the time rescuers arrived. Authorities speculated that the man died from the crash rather than the fire based upon the severity of the impact.
Fire crews and police were investigating the crash until 5 a.m.
