Assault arrest follows attack with SUV

Victim refuses medical attention

KINGMAN - Mohave County Sheriff's deputies arrested John Raymond Martell Jr., 27, of Kingman for aggravated assault after he allegedly struck and ran over another man with his SUV Friday.

At 2:30 p.m., deputies responded to an assault call in the 4400 block of N. Charles Drive. A 44-year-old man told deputies that he Martell got into an argument and Martell allegedly hit him several times.

MCSO spokeswoman Trish Carter said the argument allegedly started when Martell showed up at the home with a female friend to pick up some of the woman's things. One of the two residents at the home had a restraining order against the woman, Carter said. The victim told Martell they had to leave because of the restraining order.

Carter said the victim was not the person holding the restraining order.

The victim told deputies that when he tried to write down Martell's license plate number as he left the home, Martell knocked him down with the vehicle. Martell then allegedly turned the SUV around and drove over the victim before leaving the scene.

A witness said he saw the dark SUV back up and hit the victim. The victim refused medical attention.

Deputies located Martell's SUV a short time later in the 3800 block of Northern Avenue and took him into custody. Martell allegedly told deputies that he punched the victim after the man charged him. He said he hit the man with his vehicle while backing out of the driveway because the man wouldn't move out of the way. Martell was transported and booked into the Mohave County Jail.
