Letter: Sensitivity training, anyone?

I am really going to have a hard time sleeping tonight ... three kids who live down the street found a pigeon that had been hit by a car. It was alive but couldn't fly. They were trying so hard to keep it safe and comfortable. They came to our house and asked if we could help and even take it to a vet. I told them to call animal control here in Kingman, even helped find the number in the phone book.

These three kids were so concerned with the bird's health, they are 7 or 8 years old. When animal control got here the officer told them they don't help birds and proceed to cut its head off right in front of them. The officer could have at least gone down a block or so and performed the task. They were heart-broken and I had a problem fighting the tears back. I didn't think the bird would live but didn't expect this way of taking care of it.

The kids were so polite, even came over to return the box I had given them, and each one thanked me for helping.
