KINGMAN - The Mohave County Sheriff's Office and county pawnshops have worked out an agreement that allows both sides to get what they want.
On Monday, the Board of Supervisors approved charging pawnshops 40 cents per ticket to help cover the cost of a new Internet pawn ticket tracking system for MCSO.
Rosalba Homer, the owner of the two Pawn World shops in Kingman, told the Board that county pawnshop owners met with Chief Deputy Jim McCabe last week over the new Leads on Line system MCSO wanted to install.
The office originally wanted to charge shop owners $1 a ticket to help cover the cost of a subscription to the Internet pawn ticket tracking system. MCSO also wanted to require shops to submit photos of customers and pawned items to the office to help find stolen items. Shop owners protested that the photo requirement demeaned their customers and that they would have to pass the fee on to their customers, since they already pay fees to city police departments and the county for licensing and tickets.
Pawnshops in Bullhead City pay around $1 a ticket and shops in Kingman pay around $3 a ticket. The cost for a subscription to Leads on Line was expected to cost MCSO around $6,000 a year.
After crunching the numbers, the Sheriff's Office lowered the fee to 40 cents a ticket and agreed to do away with the photo requirement, Homer said.
"The Sheriff's Office really bent over backward for us," she said.
"I didn't think the meeting would be productive, but it was," said Jerry Homer, Rosalba's husband and business partner.
District 3 Supervisor Buster Johnson asked McCabe if MCSO would still be able to use the Leads on Line system effectively without the photo requirement.
"Yes, sir," McCabe said. "We had quite a bit of communication back and forth on that and we'll be working with the shops to make sure they get the information we need."
MCSO also planned to meet with shop owners before the end of the fiscal year to review the policy.
