Benjamin David Martin Sr. passed away early in the morning at his home on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2013. He was born in Tulare, Calif., on Nov. 14, 1922, to John and Rosalie Martin. Ben was the youngest of four brothers and also had four sisters.
After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy and was stationed on the USS St. Lo off the coast of the Philippines during World War II. After kamikaze pilots destroyed his ship, he survived his injuries to be awarded many medals and commendations, including the Purple Heart. After the war, he returned home and became a skilled automobile mechanic. While working at Murphy Oldsmobile in Los Angeles, he met the love of his life, LaVerne, who became his wife for the next 61 years. They had two beautiful children after they got married, Yvonne and Ben Jr.
After moving to Sylmar, where he enjoyed working with his horses, he went to work for Mercedes-Benz of Hollywood until his retirement. Ben and LaVerne moved to Kingman in 1980, where they enjoyed growing fruit trees as well as raising chickens and various other animals. Besides leaving his wife LaVerne, as well as his children Yvonne and Ben Jr., he leaves his three beautiful grandchildren, Violet, Heather, and William.
He was laid to rest on Friday, Nov. 8, at Mountain View Cemetery in Kingman.
