KINGMAN - The Coconino High Panthers boys basketball team outscored Kingman Academy 39-28 in the second half en route to a 62-51 win Monday in Flagstaff.
The two teams battled to a 23-23 tie at halftime. The Academy (1-1) led after the first quarter 13-12, but Coconino (2-0) got things knotted up with an 11-10 second quarter.
Senior Robby Glass led the Tigers with 18 points on 70 percent shooting, including sinking 4-of-7 from behind the 3-point line.
Coconino used two nine-point runs in the second half to pull away. In the third quarter with the game tied at 30, the Panthers went on the first run to go ahead 39-30. The Tigers answered when Glass went on an individual 5-0 run and got the Academy to within three, 43-40, just before the end of the third.
The two teams jockeyed back and forth in the beginning of the fourth. With the Tigers trailing 51-47, Coconino delivered its second 9-0 run of the game. When that run ended, the game was out of reach.
Breyden Potter scored 11 points and led the Tigers with seven rebounds. Jeffry Chinyere tallied seven points, Chris Pfeiffer added five, and Henry Chinyere and Cade Martin each had four. P.J. Homer finished with two points.
Coconino outshot the Academy at the free-throw line. The Panthers went 15-for-20 and the Tigers were just 5-for-10. The Academy also had ball-handling issues. The Tigers committed 23 turnovers while dishing out only eight assists.
The Academy hosted River Valley (0-1) in a non-section game Tuesday. Results were not available by deadline. The Tigers next play at 7 p.m. Dec. 9 when they host Lee Williams.
