Lee Williams wrestlers grapple with a busy weekend

KINGMAN - When Friday's wrestling action began for Lee Williams High, the Volunteers stood at 1-5. When it ended on Monday, the squad added 12 matches and is now 5-13.

Lee Williams added the four wins at the Red Mesa Duals Tournament while dropping eight in Mesa Friday and Saturday. The Volunteers beat La Joya twice by identical scores of 54-24, Globe (54-24) and Westview (45-27).

Moon Valley and Estrella Foothills visited Lee Williams on Monday and handed the Vols one loss each. Moon Valley won 66-7, and Estrella Foothills defeated Lee Williams 54-12.

Though the team as a whole continues to mature, there is measurable individual success. Nick Verville at 126 pounds went 10-0 at Red Mesa and 2-0 Monday, including a big win over Moon Valley's Daniel Morris by decision, 11-6. Verville is now 14-1 on the season.

Zach Sanchez (120) went 7-1 at the tournament but did not wrestle Monday. Sanchez is 11-1.

Kip Penny (285) and Tiberius Williams (182) also had successful tournaments. Penny went 9-1 and Williams was 7-3 to improve to 9-6.

The Volunteers are now in practice mode over the holiday break and resume the season Jan. 7 at Buckeye Youngker.
