Storms knock out power across Mohave County

KINGMAN - About 10,000 customers of UniSource Energy Services in Mohave County were cut off from electricity Sunday afternoon when high winds sheared four transmission poles south of the Griffith Road interchange, said Bill DeJulio, senior director of electrical operations for UniSource.

The Griffith power substation shut down at 1:52 p.m. Sunday, leaving all of Golden Valley and south downtown Kingman without power for about two hours, DeJulio said.

The communities of Chloride, Dolan Springs, Meadview and White Hills were also affected by the power outage. Electricity was out until 6 a.m. Monday for about 200 UniSource customers in Yucca, which is home to North American Pipe Corp. and Chrysler Corp. proving grounds.

"The storm hit us pretty hard," DeJulio said from Lake Havasu City, where winds took out 44 transmission poles. "It was more damaging down here. We're bringing in contractors to expedite the repairs."

The National Weather Service had issued a severe thunderstorm watch and flash flood alert for much of Mohave County Sunday. The heaviest rainfall and strongest winds were reported in Laughlin and Bullhead City.

Kingman got a thorough drenching early Tuesday morning.
