KINGMAN - A California man who was arrested July 3 for allegedly transporting about $80,000 worth of methamphetamine through Kingman - while driving at night without headlights - faces seven felony charges.

Mohave County Sheriff's deputies at about 12:15 a.m. stopped Dontrell Anthony Powell on Interstate 40 at milepost 54. He was driving without lights, reportedly from California to Oklahoma.

Deputies smelled the odor of marijuana, but Powell and his female passenger said they did not have any marijuana.

A search of the passenger's purse allegedly revealed a small amount of marijuana and a pipe, and that find led to a much larger discovery: Five pounds of methamphetamine.

Powell, 24, of Apple Valley, told deputies the meth was his and his passenger was unaware of the drug stash that was found in the trunk.

The passenger was cited for misdemeanor marijuana possession and released.

The grand jury last week made it difficult for Powell to win his release anytime soon.

He was charged with two class 2 felony counts of possession of dangerous drugs for sale (methamphetamine), possession of dangerous drugs (methamphetamine), possession of drug paraphernalia (methamphetamine), possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and tampering with physical evidence.

Commissioner Ken Gregory will arraign Powell at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Mohave County jail. Judge Steven Conn was assigned the case.
